I experienced something like what R describes. For me the key was to shift my focus away from any creative activity that seemed connected to my career goals in any way. I wrote seriously in order to express my experience and I shared my writing with others, but I didn’t try to use it to make progress toward a future position as a professional. I didn’t try to add to some body of work that might get me somewhere. This lasted for months and I thought my career was over, but now those months seem a short and appropriate rest.

This is great advice, Eli. Thank you for sharing.
